Description

7 Market Street is a house built around 1830, featuring a mix of construction materials. The building has plastered stone rubble at the base and roughcast timber-framing on the upper floors, which may have originally been slate-hung. It has end stacks with rendered brick chimney shafts and old pots, topped with a slate roof. The house was constructed as the northern half of a pair with No. 6 Market Street and has a layout that is one room deep and two rooms wide, with a central staircase.

The exterior consists of three storeys and an attic, with a symmetrical two-window front. The ground floor is plastered, while the upper floors are roughcast. On the ground floor, there are 16-pane sash windows on either side of a central doorway that is set back two steps. This doorway features a 20th-century door beneath an original overlight with a pattern of glazing bars. The first floor has French windows with glazing bars and margin lights that open onto a balcony, which is enclosed with ornate cast-ironwork displaying Vitruvian scrolls and anthemiae. The second floor has 12-pane sash windows, and the building has deep eaves with a plain plastered soffit. The roof is gable-ended.

The rear elevation is plastered and mostly features 20th-century replacement windows, although there is a long narrow stair window and a second-floor horned 4-pane sash that may date back to the 19th century. The interior has not been inspected but is likely to be of interest. The area was developed in the 1820s and 1830s on the site of an infilled mill pool and contains a notable group of 19th-century buildings around the Market Square.
