Description
17 Foss Street is a shop with a house above, dating from the late 18th century to early 19th century, with some 20th-century alterations. It has mixed construction, featuring stone rubble party walls and a slate-hung timber-framed front. The building has brick chimney shafts at the right end and rear lateral stacks, with some old pots, and a slate roof.
The ground floor has a doorway to the left, now fitted with a 20th-century part-glazed door, and an altered late 19th-century timber shop front with two bays, glazing bars, and a central shop doorway. Above, the building is slate-hung and has a two-window front with 12-pane sashes. The roof has plain eaves and is situated between taller buildings. The rear is also slate-hung and features 12-pane sashes.
Although the interior has not been inspected, it is likely to be of interest. Historically, Foss Street follows the line of a medieval dam that included a tidal mill. The mill pond was filled in and developed around 1820-1830, although houses had been constructed along the Foss from the 17th century onwards.
