Description

No. 15 Foss Street is a shop with living accommodation above, likely dating from the early 19th century, with alterations in the 20th century. The building is constructed of stone rubble party walls and has a plastered timber-framed front, while the rear is hung with asbestos slates. It has gable-end stacks with brick chimney shafts and some old pots, and a slate roof.

The building has a plan of two rooms wide and two rooms deep. The front has a three-storey and attic design, with a two-window range to the first floor. The front is plastered to resemble ashlar. A house doorway is on the left side of the ground floor, now containing a 20th-century glazed door. To the right is a rebuilt 19th-century timber shop front, featuring glazing bars and a central shop doorway containing a 19th-century top-glazed six-panel door and a fanlight with Y-tracery glazing bars. Above, the first floor has two 16-pane sash windows, with the first-floor windows being larger. The eaves are plain, and the roof is gable-ended with a 20th-century flat-roofed dormer. The left gable end is slate-hung. The rear has asbestos slates at second-floor level, and includes a 19th-century four/eight-pane sash window and a first-floor canted bay.

The interior was not inspected but is likely to be of interest. Foss Street marks the line of a medieval dam, including a tidal mill. The mill pond was filled in and developed around 1820-30, although houses had been built along the Foss from the 17th century onwards.
