Description
No. 22, Foss Street is a mid-19th century shop with a house situated above. The building is constructed from limestone rubble side walls, with a plastered timber-framed front. It has end stacks with brick chimney shafts topped with old pots, and a slate roof. The plan consists of a house two rooms wide and two rooms deep.
The three-storey, two-window front is plastered and subtly suggests ashlar construction. The original front doorway on the left-hand side now contains a 20th-century part-glazed door with an overlight. A good 19th-century timber shop front remains, with a recessed shop door to the left. The stallboard below the window sill is said to have originally featured glazed tiles in two colours, with brass nosing. The mullioned windows contain 19th-century removable windows with glazing bars, each with low slatted lunettes for ventilation, and a fascia with a moulded cornice. Horned four-pane sashes are on the first floor, and smaller horned six-pane sashes are on the second floor. The eaves are plain and the roof is hipped to the right.
The ground-floor shop has no exposed 19th-century features. Foss Street marks the line of a medieval dam, which included a tidal mill. The mill pool was filled in and developed around 1820-1830, although houses had been built along the Foss from the 17th century onwards.
