Description
No. 24, Foss Street is a mid-19th century shop with a house situated above. It is constructed of stone rubble side walls with a plastered timber-framed front, featuring a left-end stack with brick chimneyshafts and old pots, and a slate roof. The house plan consists of one room wide and two rooms deep.
The exterior is three stories high with a single-window front, the front of which is plastered and lightly blocked out to resemble ashlar. The ground floor features a full-width, likely original, timber shop front from the 19th century. The doorway, recessed to the right, contains a bottom-panelled glazed door with a plain overlight. The two-bay shop front to the right lacks glazing bars. A fascia is flanked by shaped brackets featuring carved wheatsheaves. Horned four-pane sash windows are above, with those on the second floor being smaller than those on the first. Plain eaves are present, and the roof is hipped to the left.
The interior's shop carpentry is plain. Foss Street follows the line of a medieval dam, which included a tidal mill. The mill pool was filled in and developed around 1820-1830, although houses were built along the Foss from the 17th century onwards.
