Description
This is probably an 18th-century building, with some 19th and 20th-century alterations. It was originally a shop with living accommodation above, and is now partly used as a museum with the remainder as a flat. The construction is of stone rubble side walls, with plastered timber framing to the front and back. A right-hand stack has a plastered brick chimneyshaft topped with old pots, and the roof is slate-covered.
The building is small, with a single-depth plan, one room wide. The original front doorway, on the left, served both the shop and a side passage, and led to a rear staircase.
The exterior is three stories high and has a single window range. The ground floor features a 19th-century timber shop front and a four-panel door with a plain overlight. A three-light shop window to the right has brass nosing to the sill over a tiled stallboard. A moulded timber dentil cornice runs along the first floor level. Above this, the roughcast is broken by a central, slate-hung, canted bay window. The bay window rises through the first floor, with a horned four-pane sash, and the second floor, with a horned three-over-two-pane sash. A timber modillion eaves cornice runs parallel to the roof, which is gable-ended on the right.
The interior shows the results of 19th-century modernisation. Structural timbers are largely hidden behind plaster, and fireplaces have been blocked with later grates. The staircase has been rebuilt, at least in its lower section. The roof has not been inspected.
