Description
This is a late 17th-century shop with a house above, located in Dartmouth, with later modifications. The building is constructed of stone rubble party walls, while the front and back walls are plastered timber-framing. It has a shared stack with a 19th-century brick chimneyshaft and old pots, and a slate roof.
The building is a small, single-room plan with a side passage and rear service extensions. The exterior is three storeys high, with a one-window front. The ground floor has a 19th-century timber shop front with a 20th-century part-glazed door flanked by original pilasters, and a single-light window to the left. A moulded cornice runs along the shop fascia. The first floor has a pair of late 19th-century sash windows without glazing bars, and a single window on the second floor. It has boxed eaves and a tall, gabled roof that abuts a taller building to the right.
The ground-floor shop retains exposed plain beams and joists, which appear to be from the 17th century. The house interior has old plaster concealing possible original features, but the first floor retains remnants of a moulded plaster cornice likely from the late 17th or early 18th century. Both upper rooms have probable 18th-century dado rails. A late 19th or early 20th-century winder stair replaced the original. The roof has not been inspected.
