Description

This is a town house, originally part of a larger dwelling, dating from the 16th century, with alterations in the 17th and 18th centuries. It is timber-framed, with plaster infill and a roof of handmade red clay tiles. The main range, facing southeast, has four bays and includes an axial stack and an 18th-century external stack at the left end. A 16th-century internal stack, now positioned between this house and Town House Cottages (formerly part of the same house), is located at the right end. A 17th-century rear wing extends behind this stack at a steep angle to the main range, featuring an 18th-century stack at its end, and a single-storey extension roofed with red clay Roman tiles. A 17th-century stair tower is situated in the rear angle. The front elevation has two splayed bays with early 20th-century sash windows, each containing 8-16-8 panes of glass. Above, three late 18th-century sashes with 16 panes each are present. The entrance features a 6-panel door with glazed upper panels, set within a late 18th-century moulded and pedimented doorcase. A hipped gablet sits at the right end of the roof. The rear has a late 17th-century and an early 18th-century three-light window, each with a single wrought iron casement.

Internally, the house retains jowled posts, a chamfered axial beam with run-out stops, exposed plain horizontal section joists, and an underbuilt jetty. A blocked early 17th-century window is visible in the right wall of the rear extension. Some 18th-century pine panelling is found on the first floor of the main range.
