Description

This building, known as the Information Centre and Bend or Bump, is a house and shop dating from the early 18th century. It features a roughcast exterior and a slate roof, standing two storeys high with four bays. The first bay projects under a gable, and the first floor jetties out to the front and right side.

On the ground floor, there are two tripartite sash windows with single glazing bars and horns. The first bay has a small casement window facing the front and another casement in a lean-to projection on the left side. The first floor contains sash windows with glazing bars, including one in the left return of the first bay. The entrance to the house, located in the second bay, has a gabled slate hood with trellis sides and an eight-panel door that is part-glazed. There is a sun fire mark present. The entrance to the shop is on the right return of the first bay. The building has stacks at the rear, which also features a horizontally sliding sash window.

Inside, there is a plank and muntin partition, a wide-board door, and a recessed centre board. The shop was illustrated by Beatrix Potter in "The Tale of the Pie and the Patty Pan," published in 1905. This property is owned by the National Trust, given as a gift from Beatrix Potter.
