Description
The Eye Catcher, located approximately 202 metres north-east of Shepherd Bridge, is an eye-catching structure dating from the 18th century or early 19th century. It is constructed of stone rubble and features a screen wall with the remnants of a two-storey lean-to at the rear. The top of the wall has a partially remaining projecting parapet, and there are end projecting turrets that also have projecting parapets.
The central pointed arch is partially blocked and contains remains of a quatrefoil, with a blocked square window above it. This arch is flanked by large blocked arrow slits. The turrets have blocked slot windows with arrow slits situated above them. The right return wall is still standing, featuring openings at both ground and first floor levels. At the rear, there are remains of floors and footings for the left return and rear walls. This structure was built for one of the large houses located on the shore of Coniston Water.
