Description
The Church of St Andrew is a church built in 1819, with additions made in 1891 by J. Matson, including the chancel, vestry, organ loft, and porches. It is constructed of slate with ashlar dressings and features a slate roof. The building has a nave with a west tower, a chancel that includes a north vestry and a south organ loft. The four-bay nave has coped gables and elliptical-headed windows with hoodmoulds, featuring 2-light timber frames with leaded glazing. The tower includes a west lancet window with a hoodmould, a string course, and paired stone-louvred bell openings without dressings, along with a three-faced clock below, a top cornice, and an embattled parapet. The flanking porches also have embattled parapets, with entrances that have 4-centred heads and 2-light square-headed windows, as well as cast iron rainwater heads. The chancel, vestry, and organ loft have weathered bases, coped gables, and quoins. The chancel features a 5-light window with Perpendicular tracery on a sill band and a single traceried light to the south. The vestry is roughcast and includes a lateral stack, a 2-light north window with a transom, and a west entrance. The organ loft has a 3-light window with Perpendicular tracery.
Inside, the church has king and queen post trusses with decorative bracing and tracery. The west gallery, added in 1891, features turned posts, false 4-centred arches, a balustrade with a deep cornice, and early 19th-century painted royal arms. The baptistry under the tower contains a stained glass window by Kempe from 1893 and an alabaster octagonal font. The chancel arch is decorated with roll moulding, and the chancel includes arches leading to the vestry and organ loft, a panelled east wall, and a reredos with blind tracery.
