Description

Boon Crag Cottage and High Waterhead is a group of three houses dating from the 17th century or early 18th century. The buildings are roughcast with slate roofs and stand two storeys tall, featuring eight bays. The first three bays are lower, and the end two bays are under a gable that forms a return to High Waterhead. Most windows are casements, with the third bay on the ground floor having small-paned fixed glazing. The fourth bay has a fire window to the left of a sashed window with vertical glazing bars. The sixth bay on the ground floor and the fourth, fifth, and sixth bays on the first floor have sashed windows with vertical glazing bars. The entrances have gabled canopies; the entrance to the fifth bay (Boon Crag Cottage) features a four-panel door. The right return, consisting of two bays, has casement windows and a central entrance with a gabled slate canopy. Gable-end stacks are present, with the left stack being rounded. There is a lean-to outshut and a wing under a cat slide roof at the rear. The interior is said to have upper cruck trusses, and Boon Crag Cottage includes a panelled partition with two-panel doors and a corbelled stone fireplace, featuring a keystone with a carved vase of flowers. The property is owned by The National Trust, a gift from Beatrix Potter.
