Description

Roundthwaite Farmhouse, along with its adjoining barn and byre range, dates back to 1730, as indicated by the date above the upper byre door, and 1737 on the base of a reused gable finial on the added porch, both featuring the initials T.F. The building is constructed from coursed rubble with quoins, and the house is white-washed. It has graduated slate roofs and is situated on a sloping site. The house is two storeys high with four bays and features a full-width gabled wing at the rear. The barn, which shares the same roof, is three storeys tall with four bays. The house has a part-glazed door located in a stone gabled porch, with a 20th-century casement window to the right and two more to the left, all set in segment-headed openings beneath a continuous drip-course. There are three additional 20th-century casements above. The barn includes a byre door to the left of a tall ramp retaining wall, leading up to a first-floor wagon door, with a byre door to the right, both aligned with the ground floor of the house. The house features rendered end chimneys, and there is a 20th-century lean-to at the rear of the barn, which is not of interest.
