Description

Petty Hall is a large house dating from 1604, with the initials G.B. and M.B. (for Birkbeck) inscribed on the door lintel. Inside, there is a reset stone panel that has the date 1689 along with the initials C. and M.P. and a pseudo-heraldic device. The building has undergone later alterations and is constructed from coursed, squared rubble with quoins. It features a 45-degree graduated slate roof with stone coping on the south gable and has a wing at the rear.

The house is two storeys high and has six bays. There are two plank doors, both featuring false 4-centred heads. The right-hand door serves as the main entrance and has a dated lintel and architrave. To the right of this door are two 3-light windows, and to the left is one 3-light window. To the left of the second door, there is another 3-light window. The first floor has a mix of 2- and 3-light windows. All windows are square-leaded casements set in stone-mullioned, chamfered surrounds with hoodmoulds that have decorative label-stops. The building also has stone mid and end chimneys.

Inside, Petty Hall retains many original features, including large segmentally-arched fireplaces, massive chamfered beams, doors, partitions, and decorative plaster cornices.
