Description

Orton Hall is a large house, with a recorded date of 1662 on part of the building. The present front elevation is believed to date to the 18th century, likely for Dr Burn, with further alterations and additions in 1900, evidenced by the initials H. & R.G. (for Goodwin) displayed in the rear wing gable. The house is constructed of coursed, squared rubble with rusticated quoins, and has hipped, graduated slate roofs. It is symmetrical in design, primarily two storeys high with five bays (a 1:1:1:1:1 configuration), and is accompanied by adjoining pavilions. The central bay features a pedimented facade with steps leading to a panelled door within a Tuscan surround, flanked by narrow windows; a Venetian window is positioned above. A full-height canted bay window, supported by Tuscan columns at the angles, is recessed on either side. A band separates the floors, and a sill band defines the first-floor windows. Single-storey wings are set back on each return, each featuring a Venetian window within a semicircular-headed recess. The windows are mostly sash windows, some with glazing bars, set within stone surrounds. Stepped walls connect each wing and curve forward, terminating in small pavilions with ogee-headed windows. The main block has an eaves cornice, a central lead-roofed cupola, and corniced stone end chimneys. The interior was likely remodelled during the 1900 additions and contains good woodwork, including panelling to the walls and ceilings.
