Description
The Church of St James is a parish church completed in 1880, designed by architect C. J. Ferguson. It is constructed from rock-faced snecked granite blocks with dressed-stone details and features graduated slate roofs. The church is situated on a sloping site and consists of a single-storey aisle-less nave and chancel, with a north porch and an apsidal western baptistry that are two-storey. A three-stage bell-turret is positioned between these structures. The church has five bays in total, with a chamfered plinth and stepped buttresses on the nave and chancel, while the baptistry and turret have a battered lower storey.
The entrance features a plank door set in a pointed surround, with two tripartite windows with ogee heads to the left. The chancel has a triple lancet window, and there is a three-light east window. The baptistry has three windows on each floor, and the belfry openings and store door below the porch have shouldered heads.
Inside, the church features polychrome brickwork and a wide, pointed chancel arch. The meeting room below the baptistry is circular in plan with a central column. Notable interior elements include a 1930 polygonal granite pulpit and a tapered, cylindrical granite font located in the baptistry. The church also contains good early 20th-century stained glass by T Curtis of Ward & Hughes from London, including a First World War commemorative window on the south side, as well as work by Abbott & Co from Lancaster.
