Description

This milestone, likely dating from around 1812 when the roads were improved, is located on a wall to the north-west of High School House in Gosforth. It is a monolithic sandstone block placed on top of the wall, with a trapezoidal shape, measuring approximately 3 feet long and 1 foot 3 inches high. The milestone is painted white, featuring crude incised lettering with outline hands highlighted in black.

On the east face, which has chamfered edges, the inscriptions read: "TO WHITEHAVEN 11 MILES TO EGREMONT 6" with a hand pointing to the right, and "TO BROUGHTON 16 MILES TO KENDAL 36" with a hand pointing to the left. The west face displays: "TO WHITEHAVEN 11 MILES TO EGREMONT 6" with a hand pointing to the left, and "TO RAVENGLASS 5 MILES TO ULVERSTON 31" with a hand pointing to the right.
