Description
The barn and stables located to the south-east of Gosforth Hall are likely from around the same time as the Hall, which was built around 1658 for Robert and Isabel Copley. However, a date of 1658, along with the initials R.C., appears on a re-used lintel over a door on the south elevation, suggesting that the barn may have been constructed later, possibly in the 18th century. The structure is made of coursed, squared rubble with quoins and features chamfered eaves. The barn has a re-laid graduated slate roof with a stone ridge and is two storeys high.
On the south elevation, there are four plank doors and three windows on the ground floor, along with a central plank winnowing door and vent slits above. A wagon entrance is located at the centre rear, accessed via a gabled porch and ramp. The adjoining single-storey stable block to the right has four plank doors and some blocked openings. There is a chamfered surround to the ground floor door at the right-hand end of the barn. A 20th-century lean-to against the north and east walls is not of interest. The barn also features moulded copings and ball finials at the roof apex and on the kneelers.
