Description
South Haddon Farmhouse, possibly a longhouse, dates back to the 16th century and was re-roofed and had its windows updated around 1830. The building features roughcast over rubble and possibly cob, with a shallow pitch slate roof that has overhanging eaves and sprockets. There are stone stacks on the left gable end at the junction with the barn, an external stone stack on the right gable with slate offsets, and roughcast stacks between the first and second bays on the left and center. The layout is not clear without an internal inspection, but it may be a longhouse converted into a four-cell structure set into the hillside, with outshots at the rear and a two-storey porch and barn attached to the west end. The farmhouse is two storeys high with a 2:1:2 bay arrangement, featuring early 19th-century leaded iron casements, including on the first floor of the gabled two-storey porch. The ground floor has a six-panel door located between the first and second bays on the left, and a 20th-century three-quarter glazed door has been inserted beside the east gable end stack, accessed by a flight of concrete steps. The porch has a pilaster surround to the recessed panelled door and a rectangular light with glazing bars above. The interior has not been seen but may contain interesting features. The barn adjoining to the west is only partially visible; it likely has a loft over the byre, a slate roof, random rubble local stone, and a square-headed first-floor doorway with iron ties below the eaves.
