Description

Lower Sowerhill Farmhouse is a farmhouse, possibly a longhouse, dating from the 16th century, with potential earlier origins. It has undergone significant alterations in the late 19th and 20th centuries. The building is constructed of random rubble local stone, possibly with some cob at the front, and features a slate roof that is hipped to the right. There is an external stone stack on the left gable end, a rebuilt brick stack located between the first and second bays on the left, and a large lateral stack to the left of the entrance.

The farmhouse has a plan consisting of four cells and a cross passage. It is two storeys high and has a facade with a 1:2:2 bay arrangement. All window openings are from the 19th century and have segmental brick heads. There is a small 20th-century window added to the first floor left of the stack, ground floor windows to the right of the entrance, and a 20th-century picture window in the end bay on the left. The entrance features a square-headed door and a pentice porch.

Although the interior was not seen, it is reported to contain four moulded beams in the hall, which presumably form a nine-panel compartment ceiling. There is a peaked doorframe leading to a stair turret at the rear, and a step with run-out stops to the room on the left. The room beyond has scroll stops and a peaked head doorframe leading to a spiral stair. A similar doorframe is found on the first floor, with evidence of a jointed cruck truss roof rising almost from ground floor level. The farmhouse is listed primarily for the historic interest of its internal features, as described in the 1973 VAG Report.
