Description

Higher Upcott Farmhouse is a cottage, possibly dating back to the 17th century, with extensions from the 18th century and window replacements from the 19th century. The construction is roughcast over rubble and cob, with a thatched roof, hipped at the east end. A section of the roof in the northeast corner is covered with asbestos corrugated sheeting. A large external stack is located to the left of the front entrance, and there’s a slate-roofed bread oven projection. The original layout was a two-cell plan with a cross passage, later extended one bay to the west, with the north front facing onto a courtyard. The north front has two storeys and two bays. A two-light casement window is on the left of the stack, with a similar unlit window in the right end bay. A lean-to to the left is open-ended, revealing a rough plank porch to the room at the west end. A square-headed plank door with chamfered jambs is situated to the right of the stack. The south front, which was inaccessible during a survey in July 1985, is believed to have a three-window frontage with two-light casements and a gabled porch. The interior was not visible at the time of inspection.
