Description

Higher Sowerhill Farmhouse is a 16th-century farmhouse that underwent changes in the 19th century, including new windows, and some internal modifications in the early 20th century. The building features roughcast over rubble and cob, with a thatched roof. It has external stacks at the gable ends, a rebuilt brick chimney on the right, and a roughcast chimney on the left. The roof extends as a catslide over an enlarged lateral stack to the right of the entrance, which has another rebuilt brick chimney.

The farmhouse has a three-cell layout with a cross passage, although the passage is now blocked. A stair turret opens out from the hall, and there is an outshot at the rear. It stands two storeys high with a 1:2 bay arrangement, featuring a full-height projecting chimney bay to the right of the entrance. The windows are wooden casements with two and three lights, and there is a leaded light on the right return of the chimney bay. The entrance has a plank door with an inserted light and a hooded thatched porch.

On the left return gable end, there is a Gothic window with divided tracery on the first floor. Inside, the former kitchen to the left of the through passage is featureless, but there is a chamfered plank and muntin screen with a depressed Tudor arch head. The interior also has chamfered beams with step and run-out stops, a 19th-century lintel above the hall fireplace, and a bread oven. The inner room features lateral beams, which may have been rebuilt. On the upper floor, there is a stud and plant screen infill to one of three pairs of jointed crucks, with one rising from floor level. The farmhouse is marked as Higher Sourill on the 1822 Greenwood map of Somerset.
