Description
Barton House and Farmhouse is a building divided into two separate occupations. The farmhouse on the left appears to be from the 18th century, while the house on the right was built or possibly rebuilt in the early 19th century. The structure is made of rendered stone rubble with a slate roof, which is bituminized on the right side, featuring gable ends and tipped ends on the rear wings. There are brick stacks at each end of the main range, a small rendered stack on the rear right-hand wing, and two large stone rubble stacks with offsets and tapered caps on the rear left-hand wing, one being an end stack and the other lateral to the outer face.
The overall plan is U-shaped. Barton House, on the right, has a principal room on each side of the entrance hall, with a kitchen wing at the rear right side. The farmhouse on the left has a two-room plan, with a kitchen wing at the rear left side that includes a two-storey lean-to on its outer face, which serves as the main entrance porch. Barton House has a higher roof level.
The exterior is two storeys high. Barton House features a four-window range with early 19th-century fenestration that remains intact, consisting of 16-paned hornless sashes. There is an off-centre porch at the second bay from the left, supported by timber Ionic columns and an entablature, with a door that has two leaves, a panelled base, and a glazed upper part. Barton Farmhouse has a two-window range of 16-paned sashes and a gabled roof over a stone rubble porch on the left side.
Inside, Barton House showcases good quality 19th-century joinery, including panelled doors, a staircase with a wreathed handrail and stick balusters, and intact panelled shutters. The principal room and entrance hall feature moulded plaster cornices, while the left-hand room has a typical 19th-century marble chimneypiece. The interior of Barton Farmhouse has not been inspected.
