Description

Barton Farmhouse, along with its attached barn to the north, dates back to the 17th century, possibly with earlier origins, and features a later addition from the 18th or 19th century. The farmhouse is constructed of rendered cob walls, with a thatch roof gabled at the left end, hipped at the right, and a gabled slate roof over the front wing. It has an axial brick stack and a projecting rendered rubble stack at the gable end of the wing. Originally, the farmhouse likely had a three-room plan with a through passage, but the lower end on the left was rebuilt as a long barn in the 18th century. A hall stack is located at the inner end, and a kitchen wing was probably added to the front of the inner room around the late 18th or 19th century. The two-storey asymmetrical front has a two-window arrangement, with a long barn to the lower left. It has early 20th-century two-light casement windows, and the projecting wing to the right has a similar window. A 20th-century lean-to porch sits in front of the house, with a plank door. The barn has a central cart entrance. Inside, the hall fireplace has a chamfered wooden lintel, and ceiling beams are likely concealed. Roof trusses are not visible but may be of interest.
