Description
Sheepwash Bridge is a road bridge that spans the River Torridge. It was originally built in the 17th century and underwent significant rebuilding in the 19th century. The bridge features stone rubble walls with some sections of ashlar. It has four spans, including a flood arch, and is designed with four-centred arches that have triangular cutwaters. Each arch on the east side, which is downstream, has a pilaster above it. There is a cambered stringcourse along the bridge. On the upstream side, there is a refuge above an extended cutwater, which is likely to be original, as the cutwaters extend further on this side and do not have a stringcourse. The arches are distinguished by projecting keystones, and the bridge is topped with a cambered parapet that has rounded coping stones.
