Description

Lakes Cottage and Lukes are a pair of houses, likely built between the mid 17th century and early 18th century, with later additions from the 18th and 19th centuries. The buildings feature rendered cob and rubble walls and have gable-ended thatch roofs with four brick stacks—one at each end and two in the middle.

Originally, each cottage probably had a two-room layout, but Lukes, on the right, has taken over the right-hand ground floor room of Lakes Cottage. There is likely an 18th-century dairy wing behind the right-hand room of Lukes and a 19th-century wing at the back of Lakes Cottage, along with a 19th-century lean-to between the two wings.

The exterior is two storeys high. Lakes Cottage, on the left, has an asymmetrical front with three windows: mid 19th-century nine-pane sashes on the first floor and early 19th-century twelve-pane sashes below, along with a 19th-century panelled and glazed door at the centre, sheltered by a gabled doorhood. Lukes has an asymmetrical front with four windows, featuring late 19th-century and early 20th-century two and three-light casements, and a 19th-century panelled and glazed door to the left of centre, also under a similar doorhood.

Inside, neither cottage shows early features, but some may still exist beneath later modernisations. The roof structure is likely no older than the late 18th century and consists of rough straight principals.
