Description

Waldon Cottage is a house dating from around the mid-17th century, with an 18th-century addition. It features plastered cob walls and a gable-ended thatch roof, with brick stacks at each gable end and one lateral stack at the rear. The original layout likely consisted of a two or three-room plan with a through passage; the lower room is on the right, and the passage has been infilled with a 20th-century staircase. Since the house backs onto the churchyard, it may not have had a back door. The inner room may have had a non-domestic use. In the 18th century, a small outbuilding was added in front of the lower room, which was later converted in the late 20th century.

The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical front featuring four windows, which are 19th and early 20th-century small-paned two-light casements. The first-floor windows have small gables above them. A 20th-century plank door is located to the right of centre under a thatch door hood. There is also a single-storey former outbuilding projecting from the right-hand end.

Inside, the right-hand room has a fireplace with a chamfered wooden lintel that has notched stops. The roof structure, likely from the 18th or early 19th century, consists of rough straight principals with lapped and pegged collars. The picturesque appearance of Waldon Cottage, with the church tower rising behind it, greatly enhances the setting of the village square.
