Description
Barton Farmhouse and the attached barn to the west are a 17th-century structure that was extended in 1703, as indicated by a datestone in the east gable chimney with the initials F/WM. The building is constructed of rubble with a pantiled roof, which was originally thatched on the right side. It features weathered coping on the verges and end chimneys. The farmhouse is two storeys high and divided into two sections, with a total of six windows: four in the left part and two in the right. All the windows are 19th-century two-light casements with cambered heads and concrete lintel covers. The right part, which is the earlier section, retains flat oak mullion three-light windows on the ground floor, one of which was formerly a door. The main entrance is through a door located third from the left.
To the left is a lower 19th-century barn with a central entry, built over an extended house cellar, and it features a ball finial on the end gable. At the rear, there is a gabled stair turret topped with a ball finial and an open lean-to on the east side. Inside the earlier section, there is an inglenook fireplace with a bacon curing chamber and a winder staircase. Three 17th-century interior doors have been reused from outside, including a studded door set in an ovolo surround and deep chamfered beams. The left part, added in 1703, includes two shell niche display cupboards with triglyph friezes, a staircase with turned balusters (three per tread), enriched tread ends, newels formed by a cluster of four balusters, a moulded handrail, and a dog-gate leading to the first landing with heavier turned balusters.
