Description

West Nightcott is a longhouse, now a dwelling, that possibly dates back to the 16th century. The eastern agricultural end has been converted for domestic use, the roof was raised in the mid-19th century, and the building was refenestrated in the late 19th century. An extension was added to the west end and internal alterations were made in the mid-20th century. The structure is rendered over rubble with a slate roof, featuring a rendered stack on the right gable end and a large lateral stack to the left of the entrance.

The plan consists of a longhouse converted into a four-cell layout with a cross passage and a stair turret that opens out of the hall. The land slopes steeply to the east. The building is two storeys high with a 2:2 bay arrangement, and it has two large stepped rubble buttresses flanking the end two bays on the right. Most of the windows are late 19th-century, many-paned, two-light casements. The entrance is located to the right of the large lateral stack and features a plank door with a diamond light.

Inside, some features are partially visible, including an unidentified recess at the rear that corresponds to a blocked-through passage, and the remains of an inglenook fireplace next to the lateral stack. A partition that was removed between the hall and the inner room is said to have been a plank and muntin screen, with a peaked doorframe remaining at the lower end, which is otherwise featureless. The upper storey has not been seen.
