Description
Withywine Farmhouse is a former farmhouse dating from around the mid 17th century. It features whitewashed rendered cob on stone rubble footings, with part of the front wall said to be replaced in brick. The roof is covered in bitumen-painted slate, gabled at the right end and hipped at the left end. The building has a right end stack and back-to-back axial stacks with a tall stone shaft.
The farmhouse has a single depth main range that is three rooms wide, likely originally designed with a through passage to the right of the centre, with the hall and inner room stacks positioned back to back. A rear left outshut contains a 20th-century stair, and there are single-storey lean-tos at each end of the main range.
The exterior is two storeys high and presents an asymmetrical four-window front, featuring a gabled porch and a 20th-century front door located to the right of centre, leading into the presumed passage. There is a change in plane on the front wall at the porch. The ground floor windows are 19th or 20th-century small-pane three-light timber casements, while the first-floor windows are two- and three-light 20th-century timber casements with two panes per light.
Inside, the lower end of the farmhouse has an open fireplace with a steeply cambered lintel, stone rubble jambs, and a bread oven. The hall features a chamfered crossbeam with a long scroll stop and an open fireplace in the left-hand room. There is an ovolo-moulded lintel to the doorway on the rear wall of the hall. The roof is likely 18th-century collar rafter trusses, pegged at the apex with nailed collars beneath a later roof structure.
