Description

Bales Tenement is a farmhouse that dates back to the 17th century, although it may have earlier origins. The building is constructed of whitewashed rendered rubble and features a scantling slate roof with gable ends. There is a brick stack at the right end and a tall lateral hall stack made of rubble, which has been heightened in brick. A truncated stack heats the first floor only at the left gable end.

The farmhouse has a 3-cell through-passage plan with an extended lower end that may have originally served as a byre. It is two stories tall and has a four-window range with 20th-century fenestration. The hall window is set forward in line with the stack and has a slated lean-to canopy. There is an asbestos slate lean-to roof over the porch, which features a cross-passage plank door. To the right, there are small four-paned casements, and the ground floor openings have thin slate dripmoulds.

At the rear, there is a small L-shaped single-storied projection with a brick stack and a projecting bread oven topped with a rounded slate cap. The rear wall of the main range has blocked pigeon holes, and there is a projecting stair turret towards the right end. Additionally, there is a blocked through-passage doorway at the rear. Four trusses, possibly from the 17th century, remain, although the roof space has not been inspected.
