Description

Abloads Cottage is a Grade II listed building that was formerly four cottages and is now one. It dates from the 15th century or earlier, with alterations from the 18th and 20th centuries. The cottage features irregular square-panelled timber-framing with rendered infill, including some wattle and daub, and has a concrete tile roof with brick stacks. The main body of the building is rectangular, with a single bay 18th-century extension at the left-hand end and a 20th-century partially rebuilt extension at right-angles to the rear right.

The main body has two storeys, with the upper floor lit by five 20th-century three-light roof dormers and 2 and 3-light 20th-century casements on the ground floor. There are 20th-century double doors with glazing bars on the right, and a round-headed entrance to a former through passage on the left, which is now blocked. The main body and the 18th-century extension each have a 20th-century plank door. The rear features similar glazed doors and windows, all with diamond leaded panes. The right gable-end has a twin diagonal stack, while the left gable-end has a similar but projecting stack. There is also a single diagonal stack off-centre to the right and a similar stack at the gable-end of the rear right extension.

Inside, there are at least five cruck trusses, tie beams with moulded soffits, and joists with stepped stops. A large central open fire is present, featuring a bressumer with moulded stops and a moulded wall plate. The far right-hand room contains late 17th-century panelling with bolection moulding.
