Description

Lilac Cottage is a Grade II listed building that originated as three cottages, now combined into one. It has a late 17th century core with 18th and 19th century additions. The structure is made of cob and is rendered, topped with hipped thatched roofs. It has an L-shaped plan, with each section featuring different roof-ridge heights and standing two storeys tall.

The front of the cottage includes a main range with a 20th century lean-to on the left side. The left unit has three 2-light casement windows on the ground floor and one above, all of which are barred and date from the 20th century. The middle unit features sash windows on both floors, with eight panes per sash. The wing, added in the mid-19th century, has hornless sash windows, with two on the front, also featuring eight panes per sash, and a lean-to porch to the left. The right-hand elevations of the wing have hornless sash windows, one on each floor.

There is a large external lateral stack and two internal lateral stacks at the rear, all with brick shafts. Inside, there is a large beam in the left-hand room that is not original, and there are stacks for a screen above the stairs, although the infill is missing. The roof has principal rafters halved at the apex, with collars halved and a diagonally set ridge-piece from the 18th century.
