Description
Court Barton is a farmhouse dating from the late 18th century, likely a remodelling of an earlier house, with some late 19th century additions. The main part of the building is constructed from colourwashed and rendered cob on stone rubble footings, topped with an asbestos slate roof that was formerly thatched and features sprocketted eaves. There are brick shafts for the rear lateral stack and end stacks on the main range. The rear right wing is made of red brick on local volcanic rubble footings, with a red brick lean-to attached to it.
The layout consists of a single depth main range that is three rooms wide, with a rear centre wing and an adjoining lean-to. The entrance is located to the left of centre, leading into a passage, and a lateral stack heats the middle room, indicating that there may be a 17th century core to the structure. Most of the interior joinery, however, is from the late 18th and early 19th centuries, including the staircase in the passage. The service wing and lean-to are likely late 19th century additions that provide two adjoining heated rooms at the rear.
The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical four-window front. There is an arched plank door to the left of centre that opens into the passage, featuring glazed spandrels with round lights. The windows include a 16-pane sash to the left of the door and two tripartite sashes with glazing bars and segmental heads to the right. On the first floor, there are four three-light casements, each with ten panes per light. Inside, the main range features 18th century joinery, including doors with fielded panels, and 20th century grates, one of which is said to conceal an earlier open fireplace. The staircase has stick balusters. The roof space has not been inspected but is reported to have apex pegged trusses, likely from the 18th century.
