Description

This is an 18th century or earlier house, substantially refurbished in the early 19th century. The house is constructed of whitewashed rendered cob and stone, with a slate roof that is hipped at the ends. It has an axial brick stack and a rear right lateral stack. The layout is a single depth, three rooms wide, with the main entrance located to the right of the centre, leading into a stair hall. There are heated principal rooms on either side, and a former service room at the left end, which has a separate entrance to the front and was previously heated from the axial stack.

The front has a symmetrical design on the right side, with steps leading to a recessed panelled front door, which has panelled reveals, a soffit, and a rectangular fanlight with glazing bars. This doorway is flanked by early 19th century 16-pane sash windows on the ground floor, and three 4-over-8 pane sash windows above the first floor. A further door, with a half-glazed flat porch canopy supported on moulded brackets, leads into the left end service room, with 4-over-8 pane sash windows above. A curious arched recess with a sill is present on the left return.

Inside, the joinery includes 18th and 19th century features, such as cupboard doors, a 2-panel first floor door, and a stick baluster staircase with a ramped handrail. A probably 19th century pump is in working order in the service room. The roof structure features a timber wall plate and sawn timbers, with some main trusses having secondary collars, likely dating to the early 19th century, but showing evidence of a change in roof pitch at the front. A curved cob and stone garden wall to the rear is included in the listing. The building has group value with other detached houses in Silver Street.
