Description

Hillbrook is a cottage dating back to the 17th century, with some 20th-century rebuilding at the left end and internal alterations. It is constructed of whitewashed rendered cob on stone rubble footings, with a thatched roof featuring a plain ridge, gabled to the left. Asbestos slates cover the rear of the ridge. A brick chimney stack stands at the left end; a stack on the right has been blocked. The left-end wall and short sections of the return walls have been rebuilt using concrete block following the collapse of the original walls.

The interior originally comprised two rooms in a single depth. The left-hand room was the larger, heated room, while the right-hand room was also heated, though the chimney stack has since been blocked. It is thought Hillbrook may have originally been part of a single property with Rose Cottage, but the precise relationship and original layout are now unclear.

The cottage has an asymmetrical two-window facade with regular window placement, and a front door on the right. The ground floor features two two-light timber casements with small panes. The first floor has 20th-century iron casements.

Inside the larger, left-hand room, there is a chamfered crossbeam with run-out stops. The right-hand room features a chamfered crossbeam with scroll-stopped ends set against the right-hand wall.
