Description
Thorverton Bridge is a road bridge over the River Exe, built in 1908 and designed by S. Ingram, the County Surveyor, with H. Berry of Crediton as the contractor. This single span bridge features a cambered arch made from four reinforced concrete beams and has cantilevered parapets. The parapets are plain on the road side but are decorated with recessed panels and moulded cornices on the river sides, resembling an ashlar masonry bridge, with proud panels on the piers. It is notable for being the first reinforced concrete bridge in the county and possibly the only county road bridge constructed between 1900 and 1914. Nine tenders were submitted for the design, and the final cost of the selected bridge was £2,392. Photographs documenting the bridge's construction are preserved by the National Monuments Record. The bridge is recognized for its elegant design and technical innovation in the county.
