Description

Gardiners Farm is a former farmhouse that has been converted into a detached house. It dates back to the 15th century or earlier, with some 20th-century alterations. The building features square-panelled timber-framing set on a blue lias plinth, with rendered infill and a thatched roof adorned with decorative ridge decoration, along with a brick stack. The main structure is rectangular and has one and a half storeys.

On the north front, the upper floor is lit by 20th-century two-light casements with horizontal glazing bars. The ground floor has 20th-century two-light casements, some with glazing bars and some without, alongside a 19th-century plank door on the left, which has a single pane at the top and an ogee curved lintel board above. There is a former doorway towards the right-hand end that is now blocked, with a window inserted and also features an ogee curved lintel board. Some ground floor openings are framed with projecting 20th-century timber surrounds. Most of the timber-framing on the south front has been refaced in painted brick, likely in the late 19th or 20th century.

Inside, the building may contain up to five cruck trusses, with three full trusses at the center rising to the apex and gable end trusses with yolks. The cruck spurs extend from the main wall posts. The deep-chamfered tie beams and wall plate are decorated with diamond, stepped, and ovolo-moulded stops. There is a large central open fireplace featuring an oak bressumer and herring-bone brickwork at the rear. The roof also includes a single tier of windbraces. A 20th-century timber-framed outbuilding is attached to the northwest but is not of special interest.
