Description

The Gardener's Arms is an inn dating from the early to mid-17th century. It features square-panelled timber framing with rendered and painted brick infill set on a stone plinth, and has a roof that is partly thatched and partly covered with stone slates. The building includes a cross wing made of large blocks of coursed squared and dressed limestone, with a jettied first floor that may have originally been close-studded timber framing, now rendered. The roof of this section is also covered with stone slates and has brick stacks, one of which sits on an ashlar stump.

The inn is 1½ to 2 storeys tall, with a roadside front where the jettied range projects forward to the left. The ground floor features a 3-light wooden casement window and a plank door, while the first floor has a similar 3-light casement. There is a blocked window with a stone surround on the left-hand return. The right side of the building has irregular fenestration, including a single-light 20th-century casement with horizontal glazing bars, a 2-light casement with horizontal glazing bars, and a top-opening casement. A 20th-century two-light eaves dormer is present on the slated section of the roof, along with a central 20th-century plank door. The right gable end has a single 20th-century top-opening casement on the ground floor and a 20th-century two-light casement on the first floor, topped with a half-hipped gable. There are off-the-ridge stacks, and the interior features a spine beam within the east-west range.
