Description
The Royal Oak is an inn that dates from the early to mid-17th century, with later alterations into the early 18th century. The original part features square-panelled timber framing over pebbledash, likely covering the original timber framing, set on a pebbledashed plinth. It has a thatched roof with decorative ridge thatching and brick stacks. The building is linked to a west gable end that also shows square-panelled timber framing, while the rest of this section appears to have been encased in brick, probably in the early 19th century. This later part has a limestone plinth and a concrete tile roof with a brick stack. The overall plan is rectangular.
The early range is 1½ storeys high, while the later range is 2 storeys with a single-storey link between the two. The early range features two 4-light wooden casements with horizontal glazing bars on the ground floor, along with garage doors on the far left and a 20th-century plank door to the right. There is also a two-light gabled eaves dormer with a wooden casement and horizontal glazing bars. The later range has a symmetrical facade with two windows, lit by segmental-headed 2-light casements. A former central segmental-headed doorway has been blocked, with a 20th-century glass door with glazing bars positioned far right. The early range has axial stacks, while the later range features a gable-end stack. Inside, the building contains spine beams, cross beams, and open fireplaces with wooden bressumers.
