Description

Blacksmith's Cottage is a former row of three cottages that has been converted into one dwelling. It dates from the mid 17th century to early 18th century. The building features square-panelled timber framing with rendered infill and coursed squared and dressed limestone. The left gable end is rendered, while the right gable end has been partly rebuilt in brick. It has brick stacks, one of which is on an ashlar stump, and a thatched roof. The original rectangular plan may have been extended by one bay to the south. There are 20th-century extensions to the rear and the left gable end that are not of special interest. The cottage is one and a half storeys high and has five two-light steel casements with leaded panes, along with one single-light casement on the ground floor of the roadside front. A Tudor-arched lintel above one casement suggests it may indicate the position of a former doorway. There is a two-light metal casement with horizontal glazing bars at the centre and a central two-light eyebrow dormer with horizontal glazing bars. The building has projecting gable-end stacks and an axial or possibly former gable-end stack. A 20th-century two-light casement is located on the ground floor of the right gable end, with two small 19th-century casements on the upper floor. The left gable end features two 20th-century two-light steel casements. Entry to the cottage is now through the 20th-century extension at the south gable end. The interior has not been inspected.
