Description

No. 53 Barton Street is a small house that is part of a row of buildings, dating from the 18th century but featuring an early 19th-century front. It is constructed of painted brick with a tile roof and has a brick chimney stack. The house has two storeys, an attic, and a basement, and features a single window on the front. Above the 16-pane sash windows with segmental heads on stone cills, there is a two-light flat-roofed dormer, one light of which is leaded, similar to the adjacent No. 52. To the left, there is a panelled door with a segmental head, accessed by two stone steps. The eaves are decorated with dentil detailing, and there is a straight joint in the brickwork to the left, with the chimney stack located to the right. At the back, there is a parallel range made of brick and tile.

Inside, the ground-floor room features a ceiling made from rough timbers, a blocked stone fireplace, and steps leading down to a cellar, which is not accessible. The relationship of this building with its neighbours is somewhat unclear. The architectural detail at the roof level is similar to that of No. 52 on the left, but there is a straight joint between the two properties. Additionally, the upper floor of No. 53 is now part of No. 54 to the right, with which it shares the chimney stack.
