Description

Whistling Down Cottage is an early 18th-century cottage that was altered in the 19th century. It features shallow bedded coursed squared and dressed limestone, with stone slate and slate roofing, and 20th-century brick stacks. The building has an 'L'-shaped plan and is one and a half to two storeys tall.

The west front includes a single-light double-chamfered stone-mullioned casement with leaded panes, a 12-pane sash window with horns, and a two-light 20th-century half-dormer with leaded panes. On the north-facing gable end, there is a 19th-century three-light stone-mullioned casement on the ground floor and a two-light double-chamfered stone-mullioned casement above it. The south-facing gable end features a single-light window with a round head cut out of a single stone block, also with leaded panes.

The roadside front has a segmental-headed four-pane sash window with horns on the ground floor and two small four-pane sashes on the upper floor, which appear to have been added in the 19th century. There is a segmental-headed plank door located at the lower left. The half-hipped gable end is part of the range that runs at right angles to the road. The cottage is reputed to have once been used as a granary. The interior has not been inspected.
