Description

Woodend Cottage is a detached house, possibly once divided into two, dating from the early to mid-18th century. It is constructed of brick with sandstone quoins at the ground floor level and features a red tile roof with a brick stack. The building has a rectangular plan and stands two storeys high with an attic. The entrance front has two windows, with a three-light steel casement to the ground floor located to the right of a 19th-century plank door set within a heavy-pegged frame. There are two blocked windows on the first floor and an incomplete band over these windows. The gable end facing the lane has two-light casements, while the ground floor windows have blind segmental heads and bands above them. A blocked segmental-headed doorway is located at the centre of the opposite gable end, with a plank door in a segmental-headed surround to the left and a blind segmental-headed window above. A garret window features a soldier-arched head. At the rear, there is a large projecting stack with a brick shaft and an octagonal ashlar stack.

Inside, the cottage has square-panelled timber-framed partition walls and flag flooring. A small range is set within a large open fireplace, which includes two bread ovens built into the wall to the left of the fireplace and a washing copper in the adjoining room. The staircase from the former kitchen is likely a later addition. Reused 17th-century panelling with nulling at the top is present at the base of the staircase. The ceiling beams have moulded stops set back from the wall, and the original roof trusses feature butt purlins. A square-panelled timber-framed partition divides the two attic rooms.
