Description

Shuthonger House is a large, detached house dating from the early to mid-19th century. It is constructed of brick, with a rendered facade and painted brick to the right-hand return, and has a slate roof with rendered brick stacks. The house has a rectangular plan with a later extension to the right. The main facade is two storeys high and has five windows. The first floor has small, 12-pane sashes with earled architraves. The ground floor has larger, 2-pane sashes (likely originally 12-pane) within moulded architraves. A 19th-century six-panel front door is set beneath a fanlight, approached by seven stone steps. Flanking the doorway are engaged, simplified Doric columns with a Roman Doric frieze. A band runs between the ground and first floors, and pilasters with sunken panels are offset from the corners. A deep parapet features a single sunken panel and a moulded cornice. The right-hand return has 12-pane and 16-pane sashes. Three hipped roofs are present. The building occupies a prominent corner position on a main road.
