Description

CHURCHDOWN CHURCHDOWN HILL SO 8819/8919 12/18 Wilkins and Voyce monuments, in the churchyard, Church of St Bartholomew about 9m south-west of south-west corner of aisle GV II

Two chest tombs. Probably second decade C19. Stone. J. Wilkins, died 1811. Lid weathered to point in each direction: step, square edge with Greek key carving. Sides and ends sunk panel with swelling centre, moulded edge, corner Doric columns, top two-thirds fluted. Plain, 2 step base. Later inscription 1844. Ann Voyce to south, died 1819: as Wilkins, but with 3 steps to base, lowest originally carrying iron railings; brick plinth, with cambered arch showing on east at ground level. Later inscriptions 1849. Good lettering to both monuments.
