Description

Merrills is a large house on the corner of Bisley Street, Painswick, dating from the 17th century, with additions and alterations in the 18th and early 19th centuries. It is likely that the original building served as two dwellings, now combined into a single house. The construction is a combination of limestone ashlar and coursed squared stone, with stone slate roofs, except for the section facing Friday Street, which has concrete tiles. The house has an L-shaped plan, with a low wing set back from the street, running down the slope to the south.

The south front has two windows and exhibits varied features. The ground floor has two small windows and a part-glazed door, and is flanked by a late 19th-century canted bay with margin bar sash windows. The first floor features a pair of two-light casements under a concrete lintel, and a three-light recessed chamfer mullion casement under a stop-chamfered spine beam with run-out stops. There are two large 20th-century gable dormers in the attic.

The north front, facing Friday Street, is divided into two parts. The left side has a two-light and a three-light casement under a common hood mould, with no central door. Above are a three-light recessed chamfer mullion casement. Slightly set back to the right is a one-bay section with a 16-pane sash window at both ground and first floor levels, and a 20th-century door to the left, set under a stone lintel within a chamfered surround. A brick stack is on the right gable, and a large external stack is on the left. A one-light recessed chamfer casement with a hood is located at first floor level. The outer gable is coped and higher than the main roof slope. The wing incorporates a garage door. The interior has not been inspected.
