Description

Upper Cottage is a house dating from the 16th and 17th centuries, situated in a row at Painswick, near Tibbiwell. It is an L-shaped building with a gabled wing projecting to the street, set forward from neighbouring properties and featuring a through passage. The external walls are constructed from coursed squared limestone rubble, covered by a stone slate or concrete tile roof. The left-hand gable faces the street and is two storeys high with an attic. It has a C19 or C20 three-light flush chamfer-mullion casement window on the ground floor. The first floor features a three-light recessed window with a chamfered mullion and a stopped hood. The attic has a two-light window of the same design, also with a stopped hood. The gable is finished with coping and a cross-roll saddle. Large flush quoins are also visible. The right return side of the building shows a large stack and two windows – one C19 or C20, the other a two-light window. A four-centred C16 chamfered doorway leads to a glazed door. The wing to the right has a similar C16 doorway leading to the through-passage, followed by a large garage door and a recessed glazed door, all sheltered beneath a continuous hood mould. The first floor of this wing includes two-light and four-light recessed chamfer-mullion casements with stopped hoods. A two-light gabled dormer window incorporates small-scale Gothic leading. Other windows are plain rectangular leaded. A small concrete block stack is located on the right side. The rear of the building features several mullioned casement windows, including two C20 examples on the first floor. Internally, there is a large open stone fireplace with a peaked top in the front left bedroom, and a good wood bressumer fireplace with chamfered stone cheeks, alongside a spiral staircase. The roof of the left-hand half of the building has heavy, flush purlins. Various chamfered beams are also present.
