Description

Tibbiwell Antiques is a narrow frontage house with a shop, dating from the 17th century or earlier, located in Painswick. The building features large squared dressed limestone blocks and a saddle-backed coped gable, topped with a Welsh slate roof that has replaced the original stone slate. It has a deep plan with a through passage on the right side and is positioned slightly forward from the adjacent Cardynham to the left, while being set back from Upper Cottage to the right.

The house is two storeys high with an attic and consists of one bay. On the ground floor, there is a three-light 20th-century casement window set low beneath a continuous moulded string that extends to the left over a small light. The first floor has a three-light recessed chamfered stone mullioned casement with a sloped hood, along with a small light on the left return. In the gable, there is a two-light similar casement. A small stack with capping is located at the apex of the gable.

To the far right, there is an arched opening with a plain surround, keystone, and impost caps, leading to a stone flagged throughway that features a well-crafted plank and fillet 17th-century door. Inside, the shop floor is lower than the pavement and throughway, with a wide-spaced timber-frame partition that has been glazed, and two chamfered and stopped spine beams. At the back, there is a deep chamfered beam above a bressumer fireplace. The upper levels have not been inspected, but it is likely that the staircase is located at the back on the right.
