Description
The Royal Oak is an inn located on St Mary's Street in Painswick. Originally known as the Red Lion and the Royal Oaks, it was amalgamated in 1891. The building dates back to the 17th century but has undergone significant modifications in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed from coursed and squared limestone with stone slate roofs.
The inn is a long structure that follows the curve of the street. The left half of the building has eaves facing the street, while the right half features double coped gables, which are mirrored on the opposite side. The windows are scattered across the facade; the left hall includes a 4-pane sash window, a 2-light casement, and a 4-pane fixed light. On the first floor, there are two 2-light chamfer-mullion casements, one of which has a stopped hood, along with a single light between them and a 2-light wood casement to the right. Off-centre to the left, there is a pair of 3-panel doors, with the floor level being notably lower than the current paving level.
The right section of the building, which was previously a separate inn, features a 2-light chamfer-mullion casement above a loading door that is approximately 2 meters above the pavement, with a plank door that is believed to have once been a window. There is a stack at the eaves on the left and two small stacks at the ridge on the right. The far side of the building has a small paved courtyard next to Loveday's Garden, and the left double-gabled unit contains 2 or 3-light stone mullioned casements.
